Short Story: Social and Emotional Development

Based on the development you have chosen, write a short story about a toddler-
Choose one age:
12-18 months
**18-24 months**
24-36 months
Use descriptors to have the toddler show all of the characteristics specific to that age, should be at least ½ page in length.

I woke up (unfortunately) to my alarm clock with the song You'll Always Be My Baby by Sara Evans blasting in my ear. Right off the bat i jumped out of bed and checked on my neice Daveany that was staying with me for the week. She's only 1 1/2 old and absolutely gorgeous with her big blue eyes from her mom and her brown wringlet hair from her dad. She was just sitting up looking at herself in the mirror that was attached to the side of her crib. She was making fishfaces in it and laughing afterwards, i just peaked in on her because i didn't want to interrupt. I allowed her to play for a little while because she wasn't fussing or anything.
Eventually i got her out of her crib because she was calling "Mornan", because she never says the "g" part, repeatedly. Of course i was happy to get her because she's just a sweetheart. She gave me the sign language for food and asked for "wawa", water, and so i fed her her breakfast. I had a party that i needed to bake cookies for so i said to Daveany- "Want to help Aunt Morgan bake chocolate Chip Cookies?" and she almost jumped out of her chairseat because she was so excited. I gathered all the ingredients and we went to town on it. Daveany was like, "Let me stir please!" So that was her assigned job for the baking of the cookies. Afterwards we enjoyed a cookie together.
Then it was almost time for Aunt Morgan to go shopping and Aunt Hayley was going to take over playtime with Daveany soon. As i was getting ready to leave Daveany had a little trouble letting me leave because we had spent the whole morning together and she wasn't ready to be with Hayley. But i snuck out of the door when she wasn't looking because she was playing with Aunt Hayley. Later on Hayley told me Daveany had hit her because she took away her doll, she clearly knows whats hers but she ended up having to spend time in timeout for hitting. Mommy Jen and Daddy Brad soon came to pick her up a few days later and life went back to normal for Aunt Morgan and the rest of the aunts.

Milestone: Walking

Choose one of the milestones that we have examined. Give a timeline of the developmental milestone, and include an example from real life for each.

My Milestone is Walking:

~8 Months~
Babies will start trying to pull themselves up to a stand while holding onto furniture or their guardians hands/fingers. Once they can do that, they may be able to take steps when held in a walking position, or even scoop up a toy from a standing position.
Ex. Baby Tommy at my mom's daycare use to pull himself up on our coffee table to peak and see whats going on around him at a higher standpoint.

~9-10 Months~
Babies will begin to figure out how to bend his knees and how to sit after standing.
Ex. My mom puts car keys between Tommy's feet when hes in a standing position and then try and bend down to pick them up without falling.

~11 Months~
Babies will have mastered standing solo, stooping, and squatting. They may even walk while gripping your hand. Most children make those early strides on tiptoe with their feet turned outward.
Ex. My sisters and I sit about five feet across from eachother and we take turns holding a cell phone and letting Tommy try and walk those 5 feet to try and get the phone. He only makes a few steps though before falling down. (Babies walk on tiptoe because they can actually feel themselves doing the action in walking.)

~13 Months~
3/4ths of toddlers are walking on their own.
Ex. Parents start buying their children little tennis shoes for their sensitive feet as the complete the task of learning to walk.

~14 Months~
A toddler should be able to stand alone. They can squat down and then stand back up again, and depending on the toddler they might even work on walking backwards but it really challenges their skill.
Ex. Lock all cabinets, drawers, etc. so your toddler doesnt discover whats in there before you notice!

Baby's Eyesight Timeline

When First Born:
~Can only see 8-15 inches in front of them
~They can detect light, shapes, and litle movement
Ex. They can see their mom or dad when they are being bottle fed or breast fed.

1-2 Months:
~They can consistently focus both eyes
~See color from birth
~Can only distinguish bright/bold colors such as orange, red, black and white
Ex. Most of babies toys are bright or bold enough for them to recognize what they are.

4 Months:
~Develop better depth perception, guess how far away an object is
Ex. They can detect when their mom or dad is getting farther away

5 Months:
~Get better at spotting small items
~Beginning to work on more subtle differences in pastels
Ex. Can recognize the difference between colors of their toys and different things in the room

Finally Arriving at 8 Months:
~Everything is more clear
~Much better depth perception
~Close to final color
Ex. The baby can almost see just as clear as an adult could.

My Observations//Experiences of Infants Head and Neck Control

What observations have you had of infants ages 0-12 months demonstrating head and neck control?- Write a narrative explaining the different situations.

-Yesterday i observed a 1 year old girl that was using her fine motor skills to pick up the Fruit Puffs that she was eating for her snack. Instead of taking a handfull when she put her arm in the container, she jus used her thumb and index finger and took them out one by one.
- When my baby brothers were born my mom and dad handed them to me carefully by supporting their necks and putting them in the crevace of my elbow. They told me to always watch how i held their neck and head and freaked out whenever they saw someone holding them wrong.
- This baby boy Tommy at my moms daycare sleeps better in his carseat then he does in a crib. When i went to get him up from his nap he had turned his whole body around in the seat (with the safety strap on) and his back was facing us. We watched him do it in a matter of seconds. Tommy used his head to turn his body around in the seat.
